Two Conciliation Resources partners, from either side of the Line of Control in Kashmir, discuss how a recently opened trade across the Line of Control is helping to build peace among communities divided for decades in Kashmir.

Ayesha Saeed is based in Islamabad and works at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) and the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, both based in Islamabad. Zafar Choudhary is the editor of Epilogue, a current affairs magazine which focuses on Jammu and Kashmir. Zafar is based in Jammu.

In this dialogue, recorded in London, Zafar and Ayesha reflect on how the recently opened trade has grown rapidly and has survived periods of acute tension between Pakistan and India. They put this down to the determination of traders on both sides of the line to re-unite families and communities divided for decades by the line. In this way, they explain, the trade is building constituencies of peace across Kashmir. They point out that many of the traders are former combatants.
